Histone acetylation. Histone acetyltransferase complexes (HATs) catalyze the transfer of an acetyl group from acetylCoA to the ϵ-amino of a lysine residue. Removal of an acetyl group from a ϵ-N-acetyl lysine amino acid on a histone protein is carried out by the histone deacetylase complexes (HDACs).
